GERARDO LATINO
ARTIST STATEMENT:

Gerardo Latino creates highly intricate sculptures made from archival watercolor paper. For his work he has invented and developed methods for bending and gluing paper in addition to the advanced cutting techniques that characterize his sculpture.

Latino grew up in rural Nicaragua. He credits his upbringing with the careful observation of nature that is so evident in his work.  His background also provides the setting for the deep appreciation of both Mayan and Aztec art and culture found in his sculptures. Additionally, he is influenced by elements of Japanese culture, particularly by the masks used in Japanese Noh drama.
